Romantic clifftop proposal ends in helicopter rescue

A man who wanted to make a memorable wedding proposal ended up in a rocky situation after becoming stuck on a cliff face.

Michael Banks scaled the 600-foot Morro Rock, in California to ask his girlfriend to marry him through a video message.

However, on his descent, the 27-year-old became stuck on a ledge. He was spotted by Dale Kinney, a park ranger, who called for help.

helicopter was dispatched to help him and a dramatic rescue took place as Mr Banks was roped up and taken in by the aircraft.

“It was a pretty amazing rescue on the part of the Fire Department,” Mr Kinney told local newspaper The Tribune, referring to the narrow distance between the helicopter blades and the cliff.

Local authorities were less than happy at the call and considered Mr Banks’ behaviour to be irresponsible.

"It is illegal to climb Morro Rock because it kills people," said Morro Bay Fire Chief Steve Knuckles to NBC

"I have been on at least four calls where people have died on the rock."

Authorities released the video of the rescue, saying: “The gentleman will be billed for the chopper ride and other related costs.

“We are glad all involved are OK, and appreciate the hard work of our first responders.

“Climbing Morro Rock is illegal and dangerous. We hope folks will choose to view it from below, saving themselves and our fire responders’ time and money and protecting everyone's safety.”

Mr Banks’s girlfriend said yes.
