Rollercoaster riders stuck on 100ft vertical hill for hours after malfunction

A rollercoaster in Texas malfunctioned whilst riders were 100ft in the air, leaving them stuck for hours on Thursday (28 May).

Officials told local media the car was suspended 100 feet (30.4 meters) in the air on the Iron Shark rollercoaster at Galveston’s Pleasure Pier after becoming stuck at approximately 5:20pm local time (22:20pm GMT).

Footage shows emergency workers positioning a ladder truck under a car carrying middle and high school students, then guiding them off the ride and down the ladder.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Landry's Inc., which owns Pleasure Pier, said in a statement: “A thorough inspection of the ride will take place before it is placed back in service."
