Rohit Sharma joins Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad for training at Wankhede

NEW DELHI: Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has been facing scrutiny due to his recent poor batting performance during the team's tour of Australia. Despite the challenges, he practised with the Mumbai team on Tuesday as they prepare for the resumption of the Ranji Trophy on January 23.

However, there is no clarity yet on whether Rohit will play for Mumbai in their upcoming fixture against Jammu and Kashmir. According to a Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official, the management will approach Rohit regarding his availability closer to the selection process for the match.

During the practice session at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit batted alongside his India teammate Ajinkya Rahane. While his participation in the Ranji Trophy match remains uncertain, it is understood that Rohit will continue to practice with the Mumbai team.

The past few weeks have been tumultuous for the 37-year-old captain. He managed a mere 31 runs across three Tests in Australia and was forced to drop himself from the final Test in Sydney due to his poor form, handing over the captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah. This has sparked widespread speculation about his future in the Indian team.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his red-ball cricket career, Rohit attended a review meeting on Sunday to assess the team's performance, joined by head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI's new secretary Devajit Saikia.

The Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir holds significance for Mumbai as they aim to advance to the knockouts. Rohit last played for Mumbai in a Ranji game in 2015 against Uttar Pradesh.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether Rohit Sharma will feature in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match, potentially providing him with an opportunity to regain his form and solidify his position in the Indian cricket team.
