Roger Phillips announces retirement from BBC Radio Merseyside

Roger Phillips has announced he is retiring from BBC Radio Merseyside after 42 years.

The well-known broadcaster confirmed he is leaving later this year on his phone in show this morning (June 11).

Roger said: "You may know because I've mentioned it once or twice, I've been missing out on my grandson, not being able to see him as much as I wish.

"Also I've been doing this job for 42 years in all so I've decided I want to leave, although I'm not leaving the family.

"I'm going to do bits and pieces once Covid is over.

"You'll be stuck with me for a couple of months, I'll be here until the end of the summer."

Roger has lived and worked on Merseyside since the early 1970s.

Before he began presenting the Radio Merseyside Lunchtime Phone-in programme, he worked as a salesman, a graphic designer and an actor in the West End and Liverpool's Everyman Theatre.

BBC Radio Merseyside tweeted: "Our very own Roger Phillips has today announced his retirement from his Phone In show.

"Joining BBC Radio Merseyside in 1978 he's won many awards including a Lifetime Achievement award and was granted Liverpool’s highest accolade - Citizen of Honour in 2017."

And Echo editor-in-chief Alastair Machray said: "Merseyside is a poorer place for Roger's decision to leave the airwaves.

"His intellect, compassion and brilliant broadcasting skills have been part-and-parcel of life in this region.

"He has been an enormous support to me as editor of the Echo and I wish him the very best for his next exciting chapter."
