Roger Federer outlines plans for autumn return from injury at Laver Cup and Swiss Indoors

Roger Federer is set to play on home soil later this year at the Swiss Indoors as he eyes a comeback from injury.

The 40-year-old has been out of action since he lost to Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon last July and he then underwent knee surgery for the third time in 18 months, which has required a long rehabilitation process.

It looks almost certain that Federer will not be fit in time to return to the All England Club this summer, with a return to the court more likely in the autumn.

Federer has won the Swiss Indoors ten times, the last of which came in 2019 in what was his most recent ATP Tour title. He will competing in Basel once again this year, when the action gets underway on October 24.

The tournament posted on Instagram: “After a two-year break due to the pandemic, the Swiss Indoors Basel will return to the ATP Tour in the fall of 2022.

“Ten-time singles champion and hometown hero Roger Federer has announced his comeback to the stadium at St. Jakobshalle. The Swiss all-time great has confirmed his initial agenda will include the Laver Cup in London followed by the Swiss Indoors in Basel.”

Federer said in an Instagram story: “Looking forward to playing back home.”

That tournament comes after the Laver Cup in late September, with Federer already confirming his intention to compete for Team Europe.

It remains to be seen whether he returns to the court before then, but it is expected that he will be playing in London at the event, potentially in an all-star doubles line-up with Rafael Nadal.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back into competition later this year and Laver Cup is very much part of my plan,” Federer said.

“It’s no secret that I love the event and I’m super excited to be returning to The O2 and to London, one of the greatest cities in the world.

“Rafa is an incredible person and an inspiration to me and countless others around the world. He messaged me on social media after the Laver Cup in Boston last year suggesting we play doubles in London and I am definitely up for a Laver Cup ‘Fedal’ comeback!”
