Rodrigo Bentancur: Tottenham midfielder facing months on sidelines as surgery confirmed

Tottenham have confirmed that Rodrigo Bentancur has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury.

The Uruguay international suffered the injury in last week’s defeat by Bournemouth.

He underwent surgery on his right hamstring on Tuesday morning, and the procedure is understood to have been successful.

Bentancur is now set to return to Hotspur Way for rehabilitation, with the recovery period expected to last around three months.

The club has offered its support to the Uruguayan, writing on X: “We’re all with you, Lolo.”

It is another unneeded setback for Thomas Frank, who has struggled this season and has Spurs 14th in the Premier League.

Bentancur has been a mainstay for Spurs this season, appearing in all but one of their Premier League matches and starting in five out of six Champions League fixtures.

Injuries are mounting for Frank, too, with other midfielders Lucas Bergvall and James Maddison also absent.

Bentancur’s injury does seem to have spurred Tottenham on in the transfer market, though, with a deal for Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher nearing completion.

The former Chelsea star arrived in England on Tuesday to undergo his Spurs medical ahead of completing a £34.6million move, with a five-and-a-half year deal on the table.

Another midfield boost is imminent, too, with Yves Bissouma set to return from AFCON in the coming days after his Mali side were knocked out by Senegal in the quarter-finals.
