Robin van Persie hits out over infamous Arsenal red card against Barcelona

Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has spoken out on his famous red card against Barcelona in the Champions League in 2011.

The dismissal still wrangles with Arsenal supporters, after their star striker was sent off for taking a shot after the referee had blown his whistle inside the Camp Nou.

In a pulsating last-16 of the Champions League encounter, the Dutchman had just hauled Arsenal level to tie the score at 1-1 on the night, giving Arsenal a precious away goal in the process.

Arsenal had won the first leg 2-1 at the Emirates, so with the aggregate score now at 3-2 in their favour, there was a very realistic chance of the Gunners progressing with over half an hour of the second leg to go.

What Arsenal need to do during the winter break

However, moments after the equaliser, Arsenal were reduced to ten men with van Persie sent off in the most bizarre of circumstances.

Having been played through on goal, the striker shot harmlessly wide of Victor Valdes' goal one second after the referee had blown his whistle for offside.

That earned him a second yellow card, leaving Arsenal a man down, much to van Persie's bemusement, who claimed he didn't hear that the whistle had been blown.

Arsenal went on to lose the match 3-1, crashing out of the competition 4-3 on aggregate, with van Persie and Arsene Wenger fuming about the decision.

It appears the Dutchman is still not over the decision, having been asked about the incident on Twitter.

Van Persie was conducting a Q+A session on Twitter and when posed about the decision, he said: "Never a second yellow! I shot within a second after the whistle."

Barcelona went on to win the Champions League that season, beating Manchester United 3-1 in the final at Wembley, with Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro all on the score sheet.
