Roberto Soldado opens up on failed Tottenham transfer amid Manchester United defeat

Roberto Soldado has opened up on his disappointing spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Spanish striker spent two years at Spurs after making a £27million move from Valencia in 2013, with things not working out for Soldado, who managed just seven goals in 52 league appearances.

He would eventually go on to join Villarreal for around half of what Spurs paid for him, and while Soldado has rejuvenated his career since, earning a move to Fenerbahce and then returning to La Liga with Granada in 2019, he still has some regret over his Spurs move.

"Mentally I was not prepared to carry so much pressure because they paid a lot of money for me," the striker told AFP.

"I didn't know how to handle it. By the time the explosion of Kane happened, I was already in the background."

Soldado also spoke about Harry Kane, who broke into the Spurs team around the time of Soldado's Tottenham struggles.

"I think Kane is on the verge of a trophy and if it happens, I would really like him to be the captain to lift it because I know he feels the club, he loves it from the inside," he added.

These days, Soldado is impressing for Granada, the La Liga minnows who just can't stop defying the odds, qualifying for the Europa League and now reaching the quarter-finals, where they face Manchester United after defeating Napoli in the last round.

And at the age of 35, Soldado is desperate to treasure the moment. Speaking ahead of Granada's 2-0 first leg defeat to United, he added: "We don't know how many years it might take for this club to play in Europe again and I don't know if I will ever play in Europe again.

"We all have to make the most of it."
