Robert Saleh on Zach Wilson’s future: ‘Anything can happen’

The future of quarterback Zach Wilson is up in the air after multiple benchings and the team wanting to run with Aaron Rodgers in 2024. Head coach Robert Saleh was asked about Wilson’s future after a report stemmed from Deseret News that Wilson was told he would be traded after the season. Deseret News is based in Salt Lake City, Utah, only half an hour from Wilson’s hometown of Draper.

Saleh would neither confirm nor deny the report, suggesting that’s a question for general manager Joe Douglas, but said anything is possible regarding Wilson being in the plans for 2024.

“Anything can happen, especially in this sport, it’s like a New York minute right? It swings from one pendulum to the next,” Saleh said. “He just needs to focus on week to week, just putting his best foot forward and just being the best version of him he can be…We just got to take it one day at a time.”

Saleh added: “My conversations with him are to do everything he can to get ready to play a football game,” Saleh said. “As far as all that other stuff is concerned, those are things I will leave for Joe (Douglas).”

This all comes following Wilson throwing for 301 yards and two touchdowns in New York’s 30-6 win over the Houston Texans to snap a five-game losing streak. Wilson returned to the starting lineup just three weeks after being benched in a 32-6 loss Week 11 to the Buffalo Bills, only to see the offense get worse with quarterback Tim Boyle in losses to the Miami Dolphins (34-13) and Atlanta Falcons (13-8).

2024 would be the final year of Wilson’s rookie contract unless the Jets pull a stunner and pick up his fifth-year option this offseason. With Rodgers coming back, Wilson would go right back to being the No. 2 quarterback in a career full of depth-chart shuffling.

For now, Wilson is riding out the season and having fun as he could be auditioning for other teams in this final month of the season. Up next: a trip to Miami for a rematch from Black Friday with the Dolphins.
