Robert Downey Jr. reveals past jobs before becoming a movie star

In a recent conversation with film critic Leonard Maltin at the 2024 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, actor Robert Downey Jr. opened up about his early career and the jobs he held before achieving immense fame as a movie star. Downey, known for his role as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, received the prestigious Maltin Modern Master Award at the event.

Reflecting on his past, Downey revealed that he had worked at a sandwich shop and a shoe store. However, his penchant for sticky fingers led to his dismissal from the shoe store after just two weeks. He shared that this was before the era of closed-circuit cameras, making it easier to slip under the radar. Downey also mentioned his time working in clubs and at Thrifty's in Santa Monica. Though he advanced to the position of busboy, he was advised that he lacked the necessary panache to become a waiter, ultimately leading him to pursue a career in theater.

Downey's deep connection to the entertainment industry can be traced back to his upbringing as the son of director Robert Downey Sr., who sadly passed away in 2021 at the age of 85. Taking a stroll down memory lane, Downey and Maltin acknowledged that the actor made his onscreen debut at the tender age of 5, appearing in his father's 1970 film Pound. This early introduction to the world of acting laid the foundation for his later success.

When asked by Maltin if he believes his career is a result of destiny, Downey responded with confidence, stating, 'Yeah, I think this is what I was supposed to do.' His conviction in his chosen path is evident in his remarkable journey from child actor to Hollywood superstar.

The Maltin Modern Master Award bears Leonard Maltin's name and has been presented annually since 1995 at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. It aims to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the motion picture industry and have left a lasting impact on our culture. Downey's receipt of this esteemed award is a testament to his transformative influence within the world of film.

During the festival, Downey's longtime friend and fellow actor Rob Lowe, as well as his Oppenheimer co-star Cillian Murphy, took to the stage to honor him. Both Lowe and Murphy expressed their admiration for Downey's talent and his ability to captivate audiences with his performances.

The conversation between Maltin and Downey covered various aspects of the actor's illustrious five-decade career. They delved into topics such as his previous Oscar nominations for his roles in Chaplin (1992) and Tropic Thunder (2008). Additionally, Downey discussed his most recent role as Lewis Strauss in the film Oppenheimer, for which he is nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Speaking highly of his Oppenheimer co-star, Cillian Murphy, Downey praised the actor's immense talent and the impact he has on audiences wherever he goes. Both Downey and Murphy have garnered critical acclaim for their performances in the Christopher Nolan film, which has received a total of 13 nominations at the forthcoming Oscars.

As Robert Downey Jr. continues to make waves in the industry, his journey from early jobs at sandwich shops and shoe stores to becoming a beloved actor and cultural icon serves as an inspiring testament to following one's passion and embracing the opportunities that come one's way.
