Rob Key and Marcus North the leading contenders with England poised to begin managing director interviews

Interviews for the vacant England men’s managing director role will begin promptly after the closing of the application process, with Marcus North and Rob Key the leading contenders.

The search has been led by Andrew Strauss, who is holding the role in an interim capacity after the firing of Ashley Giles after the Ashes. Strauss, himself, previously held the role.

North, the former Australia batter in charge at resurgent Durham, and former Kent captain Key are in pole position, having been approached for the role.

Ed Smith also appears well placed, despite a middling record as national selector, a role disbanded by Giles a year ago.

Another broadcaster, former Hampshire captain Mark Nicholas, has also applied — and came close when Giles got the job — but is considered a long shot.
