Roads will be closed in Newport city centre so more pubs, restaurants and cafés can offer outdoor services

Newport city centre will look different from Monday as new measures and street closures are introduced.

The changes will allow more space for those shopping and also support more pubs, restaurants and cafés to start offering outdoor services.

Newport council said the streets affected include Griffin Street, Corn Street and Charles Street.

Extra barriers have also been installed to allow for pedestrianisation.

High Street is also included in these plans which means that buses will operate directly to Newport bus station. Vehicle access will be restricted to business deliveries between 6am and 10am in these streets.

Shops in Newport have been open since June 22 and extra measures such as increased cleaning regimes in key areas and council car parks, one-way systems and anti-viral treatments have been in place since then.

The council and Newport's Business Improvement District have worked together on the plans.

Newport council's leader, councillor Jane Mudd, said: “We are working hard to support our local businesses and are looking at all the ways we can help the various sectors thrive post-Covid.

“We hope that by helping create an appealing and safe city centre, while supporting businesses to adapt the way they operate, visitors will return and our local economy will thrive again.”
