Road closed after fault causes canal bridge to get stuck

Traffic is building in Leigh after a lift bridge over the canal got stuck.

The Plank Lane bridge, which lifts to allow boats to pass through the Leeds and Liverpool canal, is now stuck in the lifted position, after experiencing a mechanical fault.

As traffic cannot use the route, Plank Lane has been closed, and drivers are being asked to find an alternate route.

Disruption is expected to last for a while, and bus services in the area have been diverted.

Transport for Greater Manchester said: "Plank Lane is currently closed at the swing bridge in Leigh.

"This is due to the bridge being stuck in the up position.

"Please use an alternative route. Long delays expected.

"Local bus services from VisionBus are on diversion."

The number eight bus service between Wigan and Leigh is operating on delays of around 22 minutes, after the closure pushed traffic onto other routes.

Heavy congestion has been reported on Wigan Road, Firs Lane, and Twist Lane, with lighter congestion seen on Atherleigh Way.

It is not yet known how long the road will be closed for, or when the bridge may be fixed.
