Rishi Sunak's new cabinet including Huyton born Tory MP

Since Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister on Tuesday he has already made major changes to his cabinet.

Mr Sunak officially became the new Prime Minister after meeting with King Charles and accepting his invitation to form a government. He has replaced Liz Truss following her resignation after six chaotic weeks in post.

The new Prime Minister has now built a new cabinet team around him as he faces up to what he described as "profound economic" challenges and as he bids to fix the mistakes of his predecessor. Early in the day Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg resigned from his post after being a close ally to Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.

The second resignation came from Brandon Lewis who departed as Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary. Mr Lewis has been a regular face in cabinet in recent years, holding down a variety of front bench roles.

In a strange twist, Suella Braverman has been rehired as home secretary, just days after being forced to resign from the same post over a serious security breach. The MP for Fareham stepped down seven days ago from Liz Truss’s administration after admitting to breaking the ministerial code by sending an official document deemed “sensitive” from her personal email.

Gillian Keegan, who was born in Huyton, was made education secretary by Mr Sunak. Ms Keegan attended St Augustine of Canterbury Secondary School (since renamed St Thomas Becket) and then started her career aged 16 as an apprentice at a car factory in Kirkby.

She studied at Liverpool John Moores University and then London Business School and after a successful business career she entered politics. First elected in 2017, she was made a care minister at the health department as part of Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle last September.
