Rishi Sunak on AI: nuclear fusion, terror threat & UK supercomputer -Tech & Science Daily podcast

Rishi Sunak has set out his vision for artificial intelligence, revealing plans for a British AI safety institute, proposals to use the technology to boost productivity, and even the use of AI to help us harness the power of nuclear fusion.

The speech was the introduction to a paper on AI produced by the government, laying out both the benefits but also the dangers of the relatively new and rapidly improving technology.

The prime minister also used the speech to reveal a £1 billion supercomputer “thousands of times faster” than the ones we have at home.

Analysis of recorded marsquakes from Nasa’s Insight mission shows the red planet’s core is both denser and smaller than previously thought.

Professor Paolo Sossi, from ETH Zurich in Switzerland who co-authored the paper, tells Tech & Science Daily about the discovery of a sort of blanket of magma around the planet’s core, which was previously undetected.

The James Webb Space Telescope has witnessed a massive space explosion caused by the collision of two stars, which released many of the elements needed for life.

It was the second-brightest gamma-ray burst ever observed, as two neutron stars came together, creating new atomic nuclei; the centres of atoms.

The collision is known as a kilonova, and it results in the formation of the heaviest elements in nature, such as gold, platinum and uranium.
