Rio Ferdinand sends appropriate message to Manchester United players after Everton loss

Rio Ferdinand had an important message for Manchester United's players after the team's diabolical performance in Sunday's 4-0 loss to Everton.

United suffered their heaviest Premier League defeat for three years as Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott all got on the scoresheet for the home side.

The last time United lost an away game in the top flight by a greater margin than four goals was in 1999, when they were beaten 5-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday night, former United defender Ferdinand shared a picture containing the caption: "Play for the name on the front of the shirt and they'll remember the name on the back."

United are planning a major overhaul in the summer and after the loss to Everton Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defiantly said: "I will be successful here. There are players here that won't be part of that."

Jose Mourinho's comments about Manchester United are beginning to ring true

Speaking on his self-titled Sky Sports podcast on Sunday night, Gary Neville weighed in with his opinion on the state United currently find themselves in.

He suggested there was always the possibility that United would return to their pre-Solskjaer form given how the players previously conducted themselves under Jose Mourinho.

Neville said: "I don't think any of us who have been in football were conned by the first two or three months under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, we welcomed it as Manchester United fans, we thought it was fantastic but knew that players who were capable of downing tools under Jose Mourinho, one of the most successful managers over the last 20 years, were also capable of doing it under anybody else."
