Rio Ferdinand makes Paul Scholes claim after Roy Keane's dream Man Utd XI snub

Rio Ferdinand believes only Cristiano Ronaldo was as good a player as Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

The former England defender made the claim despite fellow Red Devils great Roy Keane leaving Scholes out of his dream teammate XI in 2013.

At the time, Keane insisted that he could not leave out David Beckham or Ronaldo so instead left out United's all-time top appearance holder Ryan Giggs and third-top Scholes.

Scholes responded to the snub earlier this year, saying: "When people name teams, it's a matter of opinion.

"Me and Maysy [David May] could sit here all day and pick 10 different teams, the amount of brilliant players that played here, so I wasn't bothered by it.

"I'm still not bothered by it."

And Ferdinand clearly would not agree with Keane's omission of Scholes, claiming that the central midfielder was a "crazy player".

Asked to name the best player he lined up with during an Instagram Live with Arco Academy, Ferdinand responded: "Cristiano Ronaldo, obvious for everyone to see why.

"But also another one would be Paul Scholes. Crazy player.

"If I had my last bit of money and I had to bet it on a player hitting a target from anywhere on the pitch, he would be the man that I back.

"Like a radar, his foot was crazy, mad passer."

Scholes won 19 major honours during his 20 years at Old Trafford and made 66 appearances for England before retiring from international duty in 2004.

He cited his family life and prioritising his career with United as being more important at the time, though many wish he had extended his time with the Three Lions.

Scholes often cut a frustrated figure for England due to playing a wider role to accommodate other central midfielders such as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

When asked if he thought Scholes retired from international duty too early, Ferdinand replied: "Yeah definitely, but then that was because he wasn’t being played in the right position."
