Rio Ferdinand explains what he loves about Daniel James at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has explained the attribute that Daniel James has that shows he can be a top player in the coming years.

The 21-year-old summer signing scored his third Premier League goal of the season in the 1-1 draw with Southampton, cutting onto his right foot and firing a ferocious effort into the top corner.

Southampton equalised in the second half but James showed his quality throughout, constantly putting the Saints on the back foot and causing problems.

While United were not able to secure a victory, Ferdinand was impressed by what he saw from James and explained what he loves in particular about the Wales international.

He said: “This kid today, he was the shining light in this team. He’s the guy they went to for any kind of inspiration. Any type of threat on goal came through this guy.

“Yes he makes mistakes but he’s young, that’s going to happen. You would be naive and silly to think that won’t.

“This boy works his nuts off. He takes responsibility, he wants the ball and when he gets in there, he gives the opposition a problem.

“What I like about him is he wants the ball. If he loses it, he jumps up, dusts himself down and wants it again. That’s the mentality of top players, they don’t shirk responsibility, they welcome it.”
