Rico Lewis misses out on England call-up days after winning Treble

England Under 21s boss, Lee Carsley has picked his final squad for the upcoming European Championships in Romania and Georgia and his failure to pick Rico Lewis has left England fans scratching their heads. After lifting the Champions League last Saturday, the right-back turned midfield player would’ve been many people’s first pick.

Lewis has made 23 appearances for City this season, 14 of those coming in the Premier League where he impressed stepping into midfield like a natural Guardiola full-back. The Bury-born 18-year-old also featured for City in the Champions League. His goal against Sevilla in the group stage meant he became the youngest player to score in their first start in the competition.

Fans were quick to point out another interesting omission in Carsley’s squad. Lewis Hall, who enjoyed a breakout season at Chelsea also failed to make the cut.

Cole Palmer will be on the plane to the competition after previously representing the Three Lions in the Under 17s European Championships back in 2019. Three other City players will join Palmer in Romania and Georgia: Tommy Doyle, Taylor Harwood-Bellis and James Trafford.

Although City’s success has been aided by financial backing over a sustained period of time, their treble is slightly more organic than many give them credit for. Lewis, 18, Palmer, 21 and Phil Foden, 23, all played a part for City this season, each of them City fans and products of the club’s academy.

The trio of Manchester boys were of course upheld by a body of more experienced players in Dias, Stones, Rodri, De Bruyne and more, like any high-achieving team, striking the balance perfectly.

Additionally, Erling Haaland following in the footsteps of his father this season gave City fans another reason to fall in love with their team.

For Rico Lewis, his future sights will be set on England’s senior squad after a debut season he’ll never forget.
