'Richarlison over Sterling' - Chelsea fans split as Thomas Tuchel closes in on £45m transfer

Chelsea fans have been surprisingly split on the signing of Raheem Sterling ever since his name was mentioned with a move to Stamford Bridge.

For a player that has 109 league goals, as a winger, with 229 goal contributions in 339 appearances for Manchester City, you would think that Blues fans would be getting out of their seat at the prospect of signing such an established player. Sterling is still just 27 and has won four of the past five Premier League titles, and football.london understands he has now agreed personal terms with Thomas Tuchel's side and could be announced ahead of Chelsea's pre-season tour of America, for which they depart later this week.

The transfer window, especially in a hypercritical environment like social media, is a tough place to spend time, but it can give a general understanding to the popularity of a transfer. Sterling is very much different though.

Despite only Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah having more goals since 2017/18 in the league, and only Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero being more productive under Pep Guardiola, given the disastrous record of Chelsea's recent attacking purchases, the jury on England's vice-captain is very much still out.

Here's how Blues fans have reacted on Twitter and Facebook. And there is a real split in the camp.

@kundaibenyu_: 45m?? What a bargain.

@cfc_wondaG: Taking City's best winger!

@Carefree_Jam: Lol nope, defo Richarlison over Sterling if I had to sign one for Chelsea

@Jai_Mcintosh: Raheem Sterling to Chelsea, you simply love to see it.

Daniel Deco Wuhe: I just don't like this signing

@ZaqueuQuinto: Chelsea just be ruining players careers man, this is why I’m scared for Sterling

@Chaitika: How is this guy worth £50M!? This is what Chelsea has come to. Feeding off city's scraps. £50M is fairly equivalent to what Sevilla want for Jules Kounde, but we busy lapping up 2 cast offs for £100M. Sterling is ok...not bad, but come on now!

@Drawski5: Very surprised at Raheem Sterling going to Chelsea. Perhaps he’s got a bit complacent at city but when he’s fired up, he’s one of the best attackers in Europe. If his head’s in the right place, he’s untouchable.

@donpabloe7: Sterling to Chelsea is a good deal for Chelsea tbh. What a player, so underrated

@joenazari: Sterling is a great signing.

@M35Blue: Great player but one thing Sterling is not is "clinical"

@santanDanny81: Sterling for £45m plus add ons is a great deal, a world class winger at the age of 27 with premier league experience already. Excellent move for Chelsea

Bomnger Jeremiah D Jerryboy: If he comes it's going to be competition that will strengthen the club
