Richard Madeley says he would replace Piers Morgan on GMB

Richard Madeley has suggested he would be happy to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain.

The 64-year-old journalist and presenter has had a few stints on the ITV news programme since filling in for the show's then main presenter from 2017.

While Piers, who dramatically left his role on GMB last month after five years, hasn't yet been replaced on the show, many people have been put forward for the permanent fixture.

Now, Richard has put himself forward, telling Metro.co.uk : "If the phone went and they said, ‘would you come in and talk?’, of course I would talk to them. It would be bonkers not to."

The former This Morning star said he enjoyed "sitting in" for the full-time presenter because he had "all the fun and very little of the responsibility or flak".

Asked if he would be bothered by the level of "stick" and "Twitter abuse" Piers received, Richard responded: "I personally couldn’t give a f***. Far too many younger presenters have been affected by Twitter and cowed by it.

"I remember when I started sitting in for Piers on Good Morning Britain , I’d have a look at Twitter after I'd done a programme and, yes, you get some nice comments but you also get horrendous abuse and, from time to time, death threats."

Richard appeared up for taking on the role (ITV)

Kevin Lygo, TV's director of television, said earlier this month that you "can't replace somebody like" Piers.

He went on to tell Deadline : "We have a roster of presenters, including Ben Shephard, Susanna Reid, Charlotte Hawkins, and Kate Garraway.

"They're all stepping up and doing a few more days than they would have done… We’ll mix and match until we feel what the right thing is to do."

He added: "There isn't a single person who can replace him."
