Richard Madeley claims it seemed 'obvious' OJ Simpson was guilty of murder when they met

Richard Madeley has claimed it was obvious to him when he interviewed OJ Simpson that he was guilty of murdering his wife, Nicole Brown.

Along with wife Judy Finnigan, Richard interviewed Simpson in 1996, shortly after he was acquitted of stabbing Brown and her friend Ron Goldman to death.

In what became one of the most famous cases of the century, Simpson was acquitted of the 1994 murder and was represented by Robert Kardashian - father to daughters Kim, Kourtney and Khloe.

Simpson was later found responsible for both murders in a civil trial.

Richard appeared on Stacey Dooley's new BBC show This Is my House, where celebrities try to work out which out of four people actually live in a certain house, and which three are imposters pretending to live there, answering questions from Stacey.

As he arrived to greet fellow judges Joe Sugg, Judi Love, Emily Atack and Bill Bailey, Richard said: "I don't know about you, but I find it reasonably easy to work out when someone is lying.

"I have been a journalist since I was 16, I have interviewed so many people.

"You've got a nose for it?" asked Bill.

"Yeah, so many wrong'ens, we did OJ Simpson, Judy and I, about six months after he was acquitted, and it was obvious within a matter of three or four minutes," replied Richard.

"That isn't the same as proving in a court of law, but in terms of that," said Richard, slapping his chest, "It was obvious that he was lying."

Bill asked: "Are there little tells, like touching the face?"

Richard answered: "I think it's in the eyes, it's always in the eyes, do they slide around a lot? They can't look at you."

Richard is now the frontrunner in the race to replace Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain, it has been reported.

The 64-year-old is set to join the ITV news show in June for a "trial", with the contract potentially extended if it goes well.

This won't be Richard's first stint on the programme as he has previously stood in for Piers a number of times.

It comes after Piers quit in March after being asked to apologise by bosses for claiming he didn't believe Meghan Markle's claims in her Oprah interview.
