Richard Keys slams VAR decision during Newcastle United defeat at Aston Villa

Richard Keys has taken aim at VAR after Newcastle United's defeat to Aston Villa.

The former Sky Sports presenter said Emi Martinez's 'assault' on Callum Wilson should have been awarded as a penalty, despite VAR overruling official David Coote.

The decision was chalked off after Callum Wilson was adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

Keys blasted the decision to overrule the penalty, and like many Newcastle fans, believes Martinez should've received some punishment for his rash challenge on the Magpies number nine.

He tweeted: "I knew it wouldn’t last. What a joke at Villa. Newcastle definitely should’ve had a pen after an assault by Martinez on Wilson but they took it back for a toe nail off-side.

"Why? Why? Exactly what they said they wouldn’t be doing."

The Magpies boss was also left fuming over the decision to chalk off the penalty after it looked as though the Toon had been handed a lifeline in the game.

Speaking after the game Steve Bruce said: "I didn't think we were looking at lines anymore, lines from armpits.

"I'm disappointed with VAR. He's offside from a toe again?

"I'm really frustrated. The handball as well, nobody in the ground thought it was handball."
