Review: Enniskillen's "wee Greek spot" offers delicious, fresh and flavoursome Mediterranean taste

Being able to get out and about again, eat well and try interesting foods from different parts of the world is right up my street.

So as a self-confessed food fanatic, a trip to Co Fermanagh is never complete without a visit to Dollakis in Enniskillen.

While I've yet to travel to Greece to try some of the local cuisine for myself, in the meantime, this hidden gem is the next best thing and always hits the spot.

The award-winning family-run restaurant has long enjoyed the sweet taste of success since it was first opened in May 2008 by husband and wife team Georgios and Sarah Maravelakis.

They have placed a firm focus on delivering traditional Greek dishes, that are exciting, fresh and tasty, and cooked with skill and love.

More than a decade on, Dollakis remains hugely popular. It has built up a regular clientèle and is still deemed worth investigating by new visitors to Enniskillen.

While Dollakis is always a lively place at lunchtime, after a long day spent exploring Lough Erne we opted for an evening meal when the restaurant really comes alive.

It was a busy midweek night when we visited (booking is essential by the way!) but we still found that famously intimate atmosphere.

We arrived in time for the all day Mezze Menu in which diners are advised to choose four dishes each - or as many as you like so that you can try a range of different flavours.

The menu has a wide range of Greek delights to choose from but while scanning, we ordered cocktails - a Hugo, made up of elderflower and prosecco, flavoured with fresh mint and lime and a Pink Gin, garnished with strawberries and lime.

In the end we opted for a range of chicken, beef and vegetable dishes including mouth-watering mousakka, crispy aubergine fitters and juicy sirloin steak souviaki.

Also highly recommended are the breaded koto chicken with tomato and feta, chilli butter beans with chirozo and dolmades - stuffed grape leaves, baked in lemon sauce.

While we were both suitably stuffed afterwards with no room for dessert, Dollakis is well-known for its great coffee.

As always the food was delicious, fresh and very flavoursome while the attentive and friendly team of young staff, who took the time to chat and laugh with us, really added to the enjoyment of the night.

Overall, the visit was a great way to wind up our staycation in the Co Fermanagh lakelands and we're already looking forward to our next visit in 2022.
