Revenue seize €367,000 worth of hallucinogenic drug 'khat' at Dublin Airport

Revenue officers made a massive drug seizure at Dublin Airport in a joint operation yesterday.

A total of 734kg of khat was discovered, which has an estimated street value of €367,000.

The operation was conducted by Revenue's Customs Service in conjunction with the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

Khat is described as a stimulant with similar effects to amphetamine. It can cause hallucinations, anxiety and aggression.

A Revenue spokesman said that investigations into the haul are ongoing.

He added: "These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing joint operations targeting drug smuggling and shadow economy activity.

If businesses, or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free-phone 1800 295 295."
