One in 10 babies born in Nottingham's hospitals weighed more than 8.8 pounds, new figures have revealed.
Figures from NHS Digital show a total of 9,285 'finished delivery episodes' were recorded across Nottingham's City and QMC hospitals in 2017/18.
A finished delivery episode is a single episode in which one or more births take place - so twins or triplets may be excluded from the figures.
Babies’ birth weights are measured in metric units. The average weight of a baby girl is 3.3kg (7.2lbs) and the average weight of a baby boy is 3.4kg (7.49lbs).
The figures show that 895 babies born in Nottingham weighed more than 4kg - roughly the same as 8.8 pounds.
There were 2,740 babies born in the city who weighed between 3.5kg and 3.9kg - or between 7.7 and 8.8 pounds.
A further 3,370 babies between the weight of 3kg and 3.4kg were also delivered in 2017/18.
There were 2,210 babies who weighed less than 3kg - the equivalent of 6.6 pounds.
The remaining 70 babies born across Nottingham did not have a weight recorded.
Across all hospitals in England there were 626,203 finished delivery episodes in 2017/18.
Some 59,678 babies were born weighing 8.8 pounds or more - a rate of one in every 10.
NHS Digital has rounded the figures in individual hospitals to the nearest five.
