Revealed: Plans for regional assemblies and Yes campaigns

HUMZA Yousaf is to announce a summer of independence campaigning, with work currently being undertaken to set up regional assemblies across Scotland for members pledged during his leadership campaign.

The First Minister said also outlined a message that voting for the SNP will bring an opportunity to see “unelected Tory governments gone for good”.

The announcement of the ramping up of campaigning in the months ahead comes after it was revealed yesterday a special conference on independence strategy, which was postponed after the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon, will take place in June.

Writing exclusively for the Sunday National, Yousaf said he has a “great sense of faith” in the “enormous wealth of talent” in the SNP and wider independence movement.

He said: “The SNP is bursting at the seams with talent, whether it’s in parliament, in university campuses or on the doorsteps all over Scotland. Our party and movement could not be in safer hands.”

During his campaign to become SNP leader, Yousaf said members would be brought together regionally to look at the way forward for independence as the UK Government continues to block a referendum.

In the Sunday National today, he said: “During the SNP leadership campaign, I vowed to set up regional assemblies across Scotland to bring together and harness the energy of our members to discuss how we cross the line and win independence.

“The SNP team are working hard to organise and schedule our regional assemblies, and I will make an announcement shortly on a summer of independence campaign activity so we take our positive message to every corner of the country.

“I look forward to engaging with more of our party members to hear their honest and frank views about the future.”

Yousaf added: “In Scotland, we haven’t voted for a Tory government since 1955. But we don’t just want rid of the Tories for five years, ten years, or even fifteen years.

“We want unelected Tory governments gone for good. That’s the opportunity a vote for the SNP will deliver.”
