Rev Richard Coles reprimanded by church over 'bad word' on Have I Got News For You

Reverend Richard Coles has told he's avoiding any foul language during his Stand Up And Deliver stint - after an appearance on Have I Got News For You saw him told off by the church.

Rev Richard, who appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, is currently taking part in the two-part Channel 4 comedy show in support of Stand Up To Cancer.

And he told of how he's avoiding swear words in his routine - at the risk of disciplinary action from the church.

He explained that an appearance on Have I Got News For You saw him emailed the following morning over a "bad word" he'd used.

"I could be done under the terms of the clergy discipline measure," Rev Richard told Radio Times.

"I once let out a bad word on Have I Got News For You. When I opened my email the next day, the first thing I saw was 'Lambeth Palace complaint'.

"I've been a bit wary since."

Sharing his reasons for signing up to the show, he explained: "Well, as a vicar, of course I spend a lot of my time laughing in the face of death. It comes with the territory, and dark humour is good and cool."

He announced the death of partner David in December 2019, and over the summer told that sister-in-law Louise had died of cancer and Covid.

Richard continued: "Also my sister-in-law died of cancer, and Covid, in the middle of all this… so being involved with Stand Up to Cancer is obviously a good thing.

"David's dying was actually full of comedy, which made me and him laugh when he was in a fit state to appreciate what was going on.

"Medics, undertakers and clergy have a black sense of humour, but I'm not sure it's something for public consumption."

Richard is being mentored by David Baddiel ahead of the show, and will appear alongside names like Corrie's Katie McGlynn and Curtis Pritchard.

Stand Up And Deliver airs on Thursday 25 February on Channel 4 at 9pm
