Returning to Packers is ‘priority option’ for CB Tramon Williams

It takes two to tango, but free agent cornerback Tramon Williams would prefer to re-sign with the Packers and keep playing in Green Bay.

Williams told Josina Anderson of ESPN that his “priority option” is returning to the Packers. but he’s also “open-minded” about playing elsewhere.

Williams, who turned 37 this month, is coming off a terrific season as the Packers slot cornerback. He played in all 16 games, breaking up eight passes and intercepting two others. Opposing quarterbacks completed fewer than 60 percent of passes and had a passer rating under 80.0 when targeting him in coverage in 2019. Although ancient in age for a cornerback, Williams showed few signs of physical regression and continued playing fast due to refined instincts and a high football IQ.

The Packers must now decide if they want him back as a part of the secondary in 2020 or if they’re willing to move forward without him. Chandon Sullivan impressed in a variety of roles last season, including in the slot, and the Packers believe 2018 second-round pick Josh Jackson has a future in the slot. But giving up a quality contributor and chipping away at proven depth at cornerback is a risky game to play.

Williams’ preference to play in Green Bay should help the Packers get him back, possibly even at a below-market price. Of his 13 NFL seasons, 10 have been played in Green Bay. But keep in mind, Bryan Bulaga wanted to be back with the Packers, and GM Brian Gutekunst still opted to go a cheaper route. The Packers may see in-house options or a handful of prospects in the draft as better long-term options.

Williams is one of eight free agents from the Packers yet to re-sign or find a new home.
