Residents on estate face £42 a day fines for changing colour of their front doors

People living on a housing estate have been told they face fines of more than £40 per day - for changing the colour of their front doors.

Residents were warned they have two weeks to restore their doors' original style to avoid penalties that could total over £15,000 a year.

Frank Borson, who lives on Hampstead Drive in Whitefield, Bury, Greater Manchester, said he was sent an email from the property management company that looks after the estate after he changed his front door from the original white to a dark green, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The 79-year-old retired IT salesman, who has lived in his four-bedroom townhouse for 18 years, said there was 'no way' he was repainting his door.

He added: "To say the colour of someone's door is causing a nuisance is ridiculous.

"If it was in the rules then that's OK, but it's not.

"There's no way I am going to change it. Nobody is going to change it."

Six households on the Hampstead Drive estate have been told their doors need to be changed. One has repainted their door sky blue, while others have fitted new doors in a different style.

The email to Mr Borson from the property management company said: "The colours of front doors across site should remain as originally installed (white) to keep uniformity across the development.

"The green door would constitute a breach of the TP1 Transfer Document as this would be considered to be causing a nuisance."

Mr Borson was given a deadline of November 17 to carry out the work or face a £42 per day 'administration charge'.

Property company Manchester Residential Management Ltd has been approached by the Manchester Evening News for comment.
