Report: Steelers release TE Zach Gentry

According to NFL reporter Josina Anderson, the Pittsburgh Steelers are planning to release tight end Zach Gentry. The Steelers are working like the rest of the NFL to get their roster trimmed down from 90 to 53 by today’s deadline.

Gentry has been with the Steelers since 2019. They drafted Gentry out of the University of Michigan in the fifth round of the NFL draft. Gentry was always strong in run support but provided little as a receiver.

Ultimately the addition of rookie tight end Darnell Washington was Gentry’s undoing. Washington offers a complete package, is a far better blocker and has limitless potential as a weapon in the passing game.

This move is a sign that the Steelers will either only carry two tight ends on the roster, will add another after cuts are done or will designate Connor Heyward as the team’s third tight end. Heyward has been listed as a fullback throughout the offseason so we will be keeping an eye out for a signing.
