Report: Rockets to sign Trey Mourning, son of Alonzo Mourning

The Rockets are expected to sign Trey Mourning, son of Basketball Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning, in the coming days, reports Kelly Iko of The Athletic. Terms of the deal are not yet known, though the likely scenario is that Mourning is an addition for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, which are Houston’s affiliate team in the NBA G League.

Mourning played college basketball at Georgetown University, like his father. In his senior season of 2018-19, the younger Mourning averaged 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Hoyas — though his minutes were limited after missing the previous year due to hip surgery.

Mourning played in the G League in 2019-20 with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the developmental affiliate of the Miami Heat. He averaged 5.6 points (54.9% FG) and 2.9 rebounds in the G League last season.

Mourning will be the second member of the Houston organization with a father who was a former player, joining rookie KJ Martin Jr. (son of Kenyon Martin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft).

See below for a compilation of Mourning’s highlights and a look at one of his team workouts for the 2019 draft.
