Report: Redskins looking to trade Josh Doctson before roster cuts

Rumor has it in Washington that the Redskins are working on a trade that would lift one of their long-time starters out of the locker room.

No, it’s not left tackle Trent Williams, but rather wide receiver Josh Doctson.

According to Ben Standig with The Athletic, the Redskins could look to trade Doctson before the final roster cut is made in the coming days. Standig says that Doctson, though a viable NFL receiver, has run his course in Washington.

One source close to the situation believes the team has lost faith in Doctson, wants to trade their 2016 first-round pick before the regular-season opener.

Trading Doctson is the primary option rather than releasing him since his 2019 contract is guaranteed, though the return probably is no more than a fifth or sixth-round pick.

As a pure roster move, lifting Doctson from the lineup wouldn’t be detrimental to production. In his lengthy time with the Redskins, Doctson has time-and-again failed to stand up to expectations, and at this point, everyone is tired of waiting and holding out hope.

As a veteran with the team, Docston undoubtedly still holds some court in the locker room, but there’s a good chance most of his teammates would understand why he was traded, if a deal does get made.

With the 53-man roster cut looming near, it truly is put-up or shut-up time for Doctson if he wishes to remain in Washington.
