Report: Panthers linebacker David Mayo had sports hernia surgery

The Carolina Panthers’ much-vaunted linebacker corps is yet another area that’s undergoing a lot of reconstruction this offseason. 14-year veteran Thomas Davis has been told he is going to become a free agent and Ben Jacobs is now a special teams assistant. David Mayo’s status may also up in the air.

According to a report by Joseph Person at the Athletic, Mayo is recovering from a recent sports hernia surgery. Like Davis, he is also going to become a free agent next month. On the bright side for Mayo, Person reports that he is expected to make a full recovery.

Mayo has played in 59 career NFL games, all with the Panthers. He has only four starts and has mostly played on special teams – Mayo was on the field for over 67 percent of Carolina’s special teams snaps last season.
