Report: NBA sends memo to OKC Thunder about Damian Lillard’s trade request

One of the more notable offseason storylines left unsolved is the future of Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard.

On June 1, it was reported by several outlets that Lillard officially requested a trade from the Trail Blazers after 11 seasons. Since then, it has become apparent his top choice for a new landing spot is the Miami Heat.

In fact, Lillard reportedly told teams other than the Heat that he’s not willing to play for them.

This caused the NBA to send memos to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the other 29 teams that Lillard could face punishment if he comments — publicly or privately — that he only wants to be traded to the Heat.

“We have advised Goodwin and Lillard that any future comments, made privately to teams or publicly, suggesting Lillard will not fully perform the services called for under his player contract in the event of a trade will subject Lillard to discipline by the NBA,” the statement said.

Barring a miracle, the Thunder will not trade for Lillard. The 33-year-old doesn’t fit OKC’s window and his remaining four-year, $216.1 million deal would devastate its future payroll flexibility.
