Report: Lions are releasing WR Travis Fulgham

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Detroit Lions are releasing second-year wide receiver Travis Fulgham.

Fulgham was selected by the Lions in the sixth round of the 2019 draft and received stylistic comparisons to Marvin Jones Jr., being an outside receiver who can win contested catches and stretch the field vertically.

He made the Lions roster out of camp but was a game-day inactive the first three weeks before being released. He was picked up and placed on the Lions’ practice squad where he remained until Week 14 when he was brought back to the active roster. He would see 63 snaps over those final three games, with three targets, zero receptions, and one drop.

With Geronimo Allison opting out of the 2020 season, Fulham was one of five players we identified as having an improved chance of making the roster. But as we noted in the piece, he was likely competing for the Lions’ sixth receiver role and was probably behind Jamal Agnew and Chris Lacy — who was competing with Fulgham all last season.

The Lions’ current roster is now at 86 players, and they need to be down to 80 by next Saturday, but at this time it is not clear why they made this preemptive move at this time.
