Report: Jets try out Cody Parkey, Younghoe Koo amid kicking woes

The Jets tried out veteran kickers Cody Parkey and Younghoe Koo today, according to the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta.

After allowing Jason Myers to walk in free agency, the Jets have had a carousel at kicker. Chandler Catanzaro struggled early on in the preseason and subsequently retired. New York then gave Taylor Bertolet every opportunity to win the job, but he missed three field goals in the preseason finale.

Now, the Jets are looking at veteran kickers who’ve endured struggles of their own. Parkey infamously missed a 43-yard field goal that would’ve sent the Bears to the divisional round in last year’s playoffs. The kick, which was tipped at the line of scrimmage, became known as the “double doink,” as the ball hit the left upright and crossbar before landing in the end zone. He also missed 11 kicks during the regular season.

Parkey has been a free agent since March. He has ties to Adam Gase, having served as the kicker in Miami back in 2017. Parkey made 91.3 percent of his field goals under Gase. For his career, Parkey has made 83.9 percent of his kicks.

Koo is a free agent kicker who last played for the Chargers in 2017. He was waived following an 0-4 start in which he missed three field goal attempts, including kicks that would have won the first two games of the season. Aside from a tryout with the Chicago Bears, Koo has not had another NFL opportunity since then.

Koo then signed with the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football. He was one of three kickers in the AAF to maintain a perfect record during the short existence of the league.
