Report: Jags, Urban Meyer expected to reach a deal Thursday

After having “advanced talks” with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer Wednesday,  business has really picked up between the three-time national champion and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Per Jeremey Fowler of ESPN, those discussions will lead to a deal getting done Thursday.

Meyer, 56, is a familiar face to the Jacksonville community after the time he spent as the Florida Gators’ football coach in 2005-10. While there he won two of his national titles and retired. After stepping away from the game for a bit, he returned as the head coach of his alma mater, Ohio State, from 2012-18 where he won his third title (2014).

With the Jags struggling to win under owner Shad Khan, they will be turning to a coach in Meyer who has been pretty solid at garnering victories. While coaching in the NCAA he’s garnered a 187-32 record (12-3 bowl record), which is good for a .856% win percentage.

Meyer’s biggest task (aside from winning) will be to likely coach up quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who undoubtedly will be the No. 1 overall pick. When considering he’s coached two first round quarterback talents in Tim Tebow and Alex Smith, he might just be the right man for the job.
