Report: Inter Miami Reuniting Lionel Messi With One of His Top Former Barcelona Teammates

MLS may not even have reached its offseason, but Inter Miami is already making a splash.

The team is signing Grêmio striker Luis Suárez, according to a Friday afternoon report from ESPN Uruguay. Suárez, 36, was teammates with Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi on Barcelona from 2014 to ’20.

With the venerable Spanish club, Messi and Suárez won four league titles, four domestic cups, and the 2015 Champions League.

Despite adding Messi in the most ballyhooed signing in league history, Inter Miami could not crack the MLS playoff field in 2023. The club finished 9-18-7, nine points behind ninth-place Charlotte FC.

Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi were teammates at Barcelona from 2014 to ’20, and will reportedly reunite at Inter Miami.

Suárez joined Grêmio in Brazil in 2023, making an instant impact but also aggravating long-standing knee pain. The Uruguayan great told reporters in July he intended to shorten his contract with Grêmio in order to leave at the end of ’23, but denied discussions with Inter Miami at the time.

Like Messi, Suárez is considered one of the best players of his generation. He is credited by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics with 539 career goals for club and country, 18th all-time.
