Report: Giants request permission to interview Jason Garrett

The moment Matt Rhule decided to bail on the New York Giants to join the Carolina Panthers instead, it was inevitable that Big Blue turned their attention to Jason Garrett.

That became a reality in less than one hour.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports that the Giants have requested permission to interview soon-to-be former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett.

Garrett was informed by Jerry Jones on Sunday afternoon that he would not be brought back in 2020, but they opted not to terminate his contract. Instead, they left him in place and went out and signed Mike McCarthy, who had previously interviewed with the Giants but opted to pass them over.

After failing to get Ron Rivera in the building and then whiffing on Matt Rhule, the Giants were forced to scramble and attempt to connect with the only man seemingly willing to take on the job in East Rutherford — Garrett.

So far, now follow-up interviews have been scheduled with any of the previous candidates, meaning it’s essentially Garrett’s job to lose at this point.

In addition to requesting an interview with Garrett, the Giants remain on schedule to meet with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Wednesday.
