Report: Giants gave Joe Judge a five-year deal

New York Giants co-owner John Mara was stunned that the Carolina Panthers gave Matt Rhule a seven-year contract, which was something that cause quite a stir among fellow league owners earlier this week.

“We were still going to interview Matt,” Mara said, via SNY. “His agent called me early Tuesday morning to say that he had a deal in place. It was a seven-year deal and I had a brief conversation with Steve [Tisch] and Dave [Gettleman], and we agreed that we were not going there.

“We weren’t going with a seven-year deal with anybody, but more importantly, we had somebody we were excited about. So we went ahead and made Joe the coach.”

Unsurprisingly, the Giants gave Judge a more traditional five-year contract, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter, with the hope being that he’s here for all five and beyond.

After back-to-back coaches failed to make it beyond the two-year mark, the Giants are hoping Judge is their next Tom Coughlin. And things got off to a good start on that front during Thursday’s introductory press conference as Judge very much channeled Coughlin and other coaches in that vein, promising a fundamentally sound team built on discipline and toughness.

Financial details of the five-year deal have not been made available.
