The current obsession with the Miami Dolphins is centered around which quarterback, if any, will be pegged as the Dolphins future face of the franchise and hear their name called when the Dolphins go on the clock with the 5th overall pick (or in a trade up scenario). But Miami’s reclamation will need to extend well beyond the team’s quarterback — this roster still has a long way to go to get to contender status.
Thanks to Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, we now have some indication as to what the Dolphins might like to do with their next 1st-round pick, which is currently scheduled to come on the clock 18th in the queue. According to Miller’s sources, we’re looking at a potential offensive tackle.
“Much time and space has been spent discussing the Miami Dolphins moving up from No. 5 overall to select quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, but there hasn’t been as much talk about the team’s second of three picks in Round 1. I’m told by many evaluators connected to the Dolphins that general manager Chris Grier will want to keep No. 18 overall to land an offensive tackle. Said one scout, “Don’t be surprised if they ultimately move up from 5 and 18 to get Tua and a tackle.”” – Matt Miller, Bleacher Report
What a fascinating development this would be. Not only does Miller’s source indicate a trade up from 5 is possible, but the Dolphins may fall for a tackle and end up trading up from 18 as well. The team certainly has the ammunition to do so and aggressively attacking both positions would be an appealing route for the Dolphins to take.
But at what cost? Miami’s team has so many holes, two trade ups in the 1st-round figures to cost the Dolphins — potentially the 26th pick, the 39th pick and some future draft capital. And that would be a hard pill to swallow. The Dolphins’ needs are vast. So exchanging five players for two at this point would be ambitious and greatly diminish the Dolphins’ margin for error.
The only thing we do know? It’s going to be a fun few months.
