Report: Colts represented at Minnesota pro day

The Indianapolis Colts reportedly were present at Minnesota’s pro day by a member of the scouting staff, per Destin Adams of Horseshoe Huddle.

The Colts have been and will be sending their scouting staff to a majority of the pro days across the country throughout the month of March. On Wednesday, the Golden Gophers held their pro day.

According to Adams, the Colts were on hand scouting a few prospects who could have their name called during the 2023 NFL draft at the end of April.

The big name on the list is center John Michael Schmitz. He’s been a potential draft target for the Colts ever since he excelled during the Senior Bowl and put on a solid performance at the NFL combine this offseason.

Though starter Ryan Kelly is still on the roster, there’s a chance the Colts move on from him over the next month in order to create some extra salary-cap space. If they do that, Schmitz would be an ideal replacement on Day 2 of the draft.

Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network also reported that Schmitz performed well during positional drills at the pro day Wednesday, and that his draft stock is climbing into the back end of the first round.

Schmitz is a big, smooth, and fluid blocker but also tough and smart. He’s the only center available this April who could realistically be selected in the first round, and the likelihood of that happening is becoming more and more real. Schmitz is also the only center in this year’s draft considered an immediate starter.

Schmitz profiles as an ideal fit for the Colts to replace Kelly one way or another. Whether they’ll get the chance to select is an entirely different question.
