Report: Broncos won’t pursue QB Philip Rivers

Three years ago, Broncos Wire ran a poll asking fans if Denver should try to trade for quarterback Philip Rivers. More than 11,000 fans voted in the poll and 57 percent said the team should go after Rivers.

The Broncos ended up not pursuing Rivers and he spent the last three seasons as the Chargers’ starter — just as he did the 13 seasons before that. Rivers won’t be back with Los Angeles for the 2020 season, though.

The Chargers announced Monday that the team will not re-sign Rivers, who is about to become a 38-year-old free agent. Now that Rivers is going to be available, will Denver go after him this time?

Nope.

The Broncos “won’t be in on Philip Rivers” this spring, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis tweeted Monday, citing a “high-ranking” team source. That’s not surprising given that Drew Lock went 4-1 as a starter last season and he is 15 years younger than Rivers.

In 29 career games against Denver, Rivers completed 62.05 percent of his passes for 6,732 yards with 46 touchdowns against 30 interceptions. He was sacked 67 times in those contests and fumbled 14 times. The Chargers went 13-16 against the Broncos with Rivers as their starter from 2006-2019. His time in the AFC West has likely come to an end.
