Report: Blake Bortles considering re-signing with the Rams

Jared Goff is the unquestioned starter in Los Angeles for the foreseeable future, but it’s unclear who will back him up in 2020. Last season, it was Blake Bortles behind Goff on the depth chart, while John Wolford resided on the practice squad.

Bortles is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team starting on Wednesday afternoon, but he may not be going anywhere. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Bortles is weighing his options, which includes returning as Goff’s backup.

Bortles appeared in three games last season, attempting two passes and carrying it twice for minus-9 yards. His goal was to improve under the guidance of Sean McVay and land a starting gig in 2020, but that seems unlikely now.

His mechanics didn’t appear to get much better when he played in the preseason and there are far better starting quarterbacks in the NFL. It’s likely his days as a starter are past him, now being relegated to a role as a backup.

Sitting behind Jared Goff and learning from McVay for another year doesn’t seem like a bad deal, though.
