Report: Bears request to interview Jonathan Gannon for vacant DC role

The Chicago Bears have requested to interview Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon for their vacant defensive coordinator role, per Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.

The Bears are searching for a new defensive coordinator after former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano announced his retirement from the NFL last week.

Gannon has been with the Colts as their defensive backs coach since the Frank Reich era began during the 2018 offseason. He’s been praised for his ability to teach and develop cornerbacks and has been cited as a major reason for the bounce-back season of veteran cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

While Gannon could be out if the Bears want him to be their defensive coordinator, the Colts are also waiting for the decision with their own defensive coordinator in Matt Eberflus, who could be chosen as the next Texans head coach.

Eberflus interviewed with the Texans this week despite initially declining their request earlier this month.

The Colts already lost assistant offensive line coach Klayton Adams, who took a role on Arizona State’s coaching staff.

This will be something to watch for Gannon if he’s the one to replace Chuck Pagano in Chicago over the next week or so.
