Report: Alex Smith had 17 surgeries to repair broken leg

According to a report from the Washington Times, Redskins quarterback Alex Smith ended up having quite a few more surgeries than was originally believed after his gruesome broken leg last year.

Speaking to an invited audience at the Inova Sports Medicine event, Smith revealed that he ended up having 17 surgeries in total to repair a broken leg that he suffered on Nov. 18. A report later surfaced that there were six surgeries, and a couple of them were to treat an infection in the wound.

According to the report from the Times, “It is not known if all the operations that followed were related to the infections, though the absurd number of operations would indicate that the infections were severe.”

The 35-year-old was recently spotted on the practice field in Washington throwing passes, so recovery appears to be moving along while he has eyes set on returning to the field sometime in the future. Initially, it was feared that Smith would never be able to play football again, though nothing has been reported on that.

If Smith returns to the Redskins in the future, it is unclear where he fits in Washington’s long-term plans, with rookie Dwayne Haskins as the presumed future franchise quarterback and coach Jay Gruden having been fired and replaced on an interim basis by Bill Callahan.
