The 49ers aren’t done adjusting the group of defensive backs on their 90-man roster. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday reported the team had free agent cornerback Kayvon Webster in for a workout.
Webster has primarily been a special teams player in his six-year career. He did play nearly half the defensive snaps as a rookie with Denver in 2013 after they selected him in the third round out of South Florida. His only other venture into a heavy share of defensive playing time came with the Rams in 2017 when he played nearly 75 percent of the snaps in 11 games.
Aside from that he was heavily involved on special teams in each of his first four years before seeing his playing time there evaporate in 2017 when he was a defensive starter. His season was cut to just 11 games after he ruptured an Achilles.
Last season he played just two games for Houston after a quad injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. He’s never played a full 16-game season, and hasn’t played more than 13 games since 2015.
The 49ers could use some additional veteran depth in their cornerback competition, and adding an experienced special teams player gives them flexibility in their roster decisions.
Webster is the type of player who could wind up sneaking onto the 49ers’ roster if he stays healthy. There’s been no word from the team about a signing. San Francisco has 90 players on their roster, adding Webster would require a corresponding cut to make room.
