Repair work underway after large sinkhole appears in Falkirk closing major road

Specialist engineers are working to find out what caused a massive sinkhole to appear in Falkirk last night forcing a section of road to be closed.

Police and firefighters were called to Bellsdyke Road in Larbert at around 6:10pm on Tuesday October, 19, following reports a section of pavement had collapsed.

Mercy crews taped an area off between Tryst Road and Hamilton Road for safety reason.

The scene remains shut off to both drivers and pedestrians today and is likely to remain that way for some time.

Nobody was injured and it's currently not known what has caused the hole to appear.

A Scottish Water spokesperson: "Currently it is unclear what has caused the sinkhole on the footpath in Bellsdyke Road.

"Our teams, along with engineers from other utilities, are on site making the area safe and inspecting the damage to the infrastructure in the hole.

"We are liaising with all the organisations involved to assess the situation and once the hole has been made stable, the cause of it can be investigated."

A Falkirk Council spokesperson said: "Investigation work is ongoing."
