Reopen Embankment to improve traffic levels, readers say

Nottinghamshire Live readers say they believe reopening a large section of Nottingham's Victoria Embankment will help improve traffic levels in Nottingham.

The Embankment was closed to traffic in a bid to improve access to the riverside, parks and gardens as well as make the riverside road a traffic-free area for cyclists and pedestrians.

There are suggestions the closure could be made permanent, with Nottingham City Council launching a public consultation into what should happen next.

Nottinghamshire Live posed a question to its readers, asking them what they thought the best way to reduce a build-up of traffic in the city was.

There were lots of different answers given, the most popular being to reopen the Embankment to traffic once again.

Neil Smith said: "Reopen Canal Street and the Embankment, will take plenty of distance off people's journeys."

Darren Tunaley wrote: "Stop closing roads (Embankment) for cyclists who refuse to use the cycle paths and creating ridiculously narrow roads (Castle Boulevard)."

"Open up the embankment to traffic again," Dwayne Lonsdale suggested.

Councillor Adele Williams, portfolio holder for transport at Nottingham City Council, previously said: “I can reassure people that we are listening, we want to hear people’s views, and they will all be taken into account to reach a decision."

Another suggestion was to build another entrance and exit to the popular Victoria Retail Park and to reduce the number of roadworks on Mansfield Road, one of the busiest routes in and out of the city.

Others wanted to see public transport made cheaper and more parking enforcement near schools, to stop people parking irresponsibly on the school run.
